According to the Genocide Convention, genocide is defined as “any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.” It’s a serious and sobering topic, but with the world still recovering from many past genocides and with others happening even today, it’s important to educate ourselves and make sure we’re aware of what’s going on in the world around us. In this post, I want to share with you some information about some of the biggest genocides in history, which can hopefully help us understand this term and why it’s so important to be aware of. First up, the Holocaust. This one is probably the most well-known genocide, and it happened during World War II. The Nazi party and its leader, Adolf Hitler, attempted to exterminate the Jewish population of Europe. In total, it’s estimated that between 5 and 6 million Jews were killed, as well as millions of others, including ethically Slavic people, Romani people, homosexuals, and people with disabilities. The next on the list is the Rwandan genocide, which took place in 1994. This was an almost unbelievably brutal event, in which members of the Hutu majority government killed an estimated 1 million Tutsi people and moderate Hutus. The event was sparked by political unrest in the country and enabled by longstanding ethnic tensions. Another genocide was the Armenian Genocide, which happened in the early 1900s. Ottoman authorities set out to rid the empire of its Armenian population, deporting people and killing them in the process. It’s estimated that around 1.5 million people were killed in this attempted genocide. Those are just a few tragic examples of the genocides that have taken place in the span of our history as a species. And while it’s important to remember and learn from these tragedies, it’s equally important to look at what we can do to make sure that such horrific events don’t happen again. We must push ourselves to educate ourselves and challenge those who deny or downplay genocides. We must speak up for those whose stories are often not told or are only partially told. We must fight for those whose lives are being taken away. We can also do our part by helping those who are still suffering from the aftereffects of genocide. This can mean donating to organizations that help with mental health, rebuilding efforts, and education efforts. It takes all of us working together to create a better, more peaceful world.
